Sugar Cookie Recipe

I love making sugar cookies and giving as gifts for every holiday. It’s such an easy way to make every occasion a little more personal and from the heart. I have a recipe I have been using for years, which I have included for you. I usually find a container to display the cookies in and add other special treats to go along with the edibles. Wrap the cookies individually in plastic treat bags.  I like to adorn ornaments, ribbons, and tags to finish off the present.

Give out cookies to all the ones you love. xo

How to Make Sugar Cookies

Preheat Oven to 375 degrees F.

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 extra large egg (I always use extra large eggs when baking)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  1. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. Set aside.
  2. Using an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, on medium speed, beat the butter and sugar for approximately 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until combined.
  3. With the mixer on low speed, begin adding flour mixture a little at a time. Scrape the bowl often. Once the flour has been added the dough should form a ball around the attachment and feel soft but not sticky.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic and press down flat to form a disc. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. You can store in refrigerator for up to a week, wrapped tightly.
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Pick all your favorite cookie cutters to desired shapes.
  6. Carefully transfer cut-outs with a spatula to a parchment lined cookie sheet. I place the tray of cut-out cookies in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  7. Bake sheet pan in the middle of the oven for 7-9 minutes or until puffy. Watch the cookies closely as you don’t want the edges to get brown.
  8. Cool cookies on pan for at least 2 minutes and transfer to a wire rack to continue cooling.
  9. Decorate cookies with buttercream frosting. (I will have this recipe for you tomorrow).
