Delicious Buttercream Frosting

Buttercream Frosting

Sugar Cookie Recipe

I’ve been testing different buttercream recipes all my life it seems.  There are so many ones out there. Some have ingredients like real butter and others use margarine and crisco. Some are easier to work with than others but for me it always comes down to taste. I have done the test of frosting cookies and holding them for a few days and the real butter recipes always win hands down. The butter enhances the butter taste in my sugar cookie recipe. Margarine and crisco ingredients just have a funky after taste and for me it ruins my cookie flavor. So here is my go-to buttercream recipe.

Buttercream Frosting

  • 2 cups butter (4 sticks), softened
  • 2 pounds confectioners sugar (7 1/2 to 8 cups)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tablespoons whole milk

  1. In the bowl of an electric mixer; using a paddle attachment, beat butter on medium speed for 3 minutes.
  2. Add half the confectioners’ sugar, one cup at a time. Beat on low for two minutes with each addition. Scrape the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed.
  3. Add remaining sugar one cup at a time, vanilla and milk, and beat until the frosting is creamy and fluffy. Add any food coloring at this time.
  4. Use immediately or store in an airtight container refrigerated for up to 30 days.
